Normal Ovary vs. Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI)

Normal Ovary vs. Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI)

Ovaries are an essential part of the female reproductive system. Their primary functions include: ✔ Producing eggs (ova) for fertilization. ✔ Secreting hormones like estrogen and progesterone, crucial for menstrual cycles and overall health.

In a healthy woman, ovaries release eggs regularly from puberty until menopause, maintaining reproductive function. However, in some cases, the ovaries stop functioning much earlier than expected, leading to a condition known as Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI).

What is Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI)?

Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (previously called premature ovarian failure) occurs when the ovaries stop functioning normally before the age of 40. Unlike menopause, where ovarian function stops permanently, women with POI may still have intermittent ovarian activity and occasional ovulation.

Symptoms of POI

Women with POI may experience:

Irregular or missed periods

Hot flashes & night sweats

Mood swings & depression

Infertility or difficulty conceiving

Low libido & vaginal dryness

Brain fog, fatigue, & trouble sleeping

Weak bones (osteoporosis risk)

If you are facing these symptoms, it is crucial to seek medical advice for early diagnosis and management.

What Causes Premature Ovarian Insufficiency?

Several factors may contribute to POI, including:

1️⃣ Genetic Factors: Conditions like Turner Syndrome & Fragile X Syndrome.

2️⃣ Autoimmune Disorders: The immune system mistakenly attacks ovarian tissue.

3️⃣ Cancer Treatments: Radiation & chemotherapy can damage ovaries.

4️⃣ Surgical Removal of Ovaries: Due to cysts, tumors, or endometriosis.

5️⃣ Environmental Factors: Smoking, toxins, and certain infections.

How is POI Diagnosed?

At Harsh Hospital, Himatnagar, we use a combination of tests to confirm POI, including:

🔬 Hormone Blood Tests – FSH, LH, Estrogen levels.

🩺 Ultrasound – To check ovarian volume and follicle count.

🧬 Genetic Testing – To identify inherited conditions.

Treatment & Management of POI

While there is no cure for POI, treatments focus on managing symptoms and preventing complications

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT): Restores estrogen levels to reduce menopause-like symptoms.

✅ Fertility Treatment: IVF with donor eggs is an option for women wishing to conceive.

Bone Health Support: Calcium & Vitamin D supplementation to prevent osteoporosis.

Lifestyle Modifications: Healthy diet, regular exercise, and stress management.

🚨 If your menstrual cycle becomes irregular or stops for three months or more, it is important to seek medical care. Early detection can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life.
